Frequently Asked Questions
What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is like melting a plastic on metal parts. It is an industrial coating that looks like paint but is much more durable. A powder coating gun is used to spray an electrically charged dust around a grounded part. It is a thick coating as each layer can add a sheet of papers worth of thickness. Powder coating is only as good as the substrate it is applied over. Preparation is the most time consuming and arguably the most important part of powder coating.
What is your process?
Nearly every part will start with chemical stripping or degreasing so we have a raw metal substrate. From there, parts are preheated up to 480 degrees in order to burn off any contamination. Next we sandblast with an 80 grit aluminum oxide at high volumes and low pressure to just clean and profile the metal. This provides a surface ideal for promoting a mechanical bond between the coating and the part – while not being overly aggressive on the base metal. We use a high temp tape and silicon plugs to preserve any mating surfaces. If the part is damaged we sand to remove material, weld to add material, use epoxy metal fillers, and apply primers for repair.
How do I get something powder coated?
The best way to get a quote is to stop by during business hours with your project. You can also call, text, or email us with a description of your project (pictures, dimensions, condition of the parts, and desired color). Once we receive your parts our typical lead time without expedition fees is 1-2 weeks. We will typically request for parts to be disassembled as far as possible.
What is your warranty?
We offer a one year warranty that covers coating failure and defects. Damage or failure from corrosion, road-hazards, chemicals, climate condition, design, or neglect is not covered. The warranty is for the coating only, at our discretion, and does not cover installation, removal, equipment, or transportation costs. The warranty is only valid for parts the customer has agreed to have sandblasted.
Can you powder coat plastic?
No. We can powder coat nearly anything metal that can fit in our equipment. Our largest oven is 8x8x12′ and our sandblasting cabinet is 8x4x3′.
